No. 18 Delaware Men’s Lacrosse Downs Drexel on the Road, 13-6 April 20, 2024

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware men’s lacrosse team won its fifth straight game Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens topped Drexel 13-6 to remain undefeated in CAA action improving to 8-3 on the year while the Dragons fell to 5-8 and 2-4 in league play.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mike Robinson finished the day with a team-leading four goals.
  • JP Ward tallied seven points for the second straight game with three goals and four assists.
  • Matt Acchione recorded his first hat trick of the year, including two goals in the third quarter.
  • Freshman John McCurry netted two goals in the first quarter.
  • FOGO OJ Morris won 11 of his 21 faceoffs on the day.
  • Senior goaltender Kevin Ellington recorded 17 saves and finished the day with a .739 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It took until halfway through the first quarter for someone to get on the board as it was Drexel who drew the first blow taking a 1-0 lead at the 8:46 mark. McCurry knotted the game at 1-1 with 1:16 left in the first and then gave the Hens their first lead of the day with his second goal of the quarter with just 17 seconds to play.
  • In the second, Matt Acchione scored Delaware’s third straight goal at the 9:52 mark, but the Dragons responded with a three-goal spurt to take a 4-3 lead with 4:48 left before the break. In the final seconds of the half, Robinson responded with his first goal of the game on an assist from Ward to give Delaware a 5-4 lead headed into the locker room.
  • In the third, Matt Acchione tallied Delaware’s only scores of the quarter while Ellington held the Dragons off the board with four saves in the quarter. Acchione’s first goal of the quarter was his seventh extra-man opportunity goal of the year.
  • The Blue Hens pulled away in the fourth as Ward and Robinson put on a clinic, each scoring two goals by the 8:47 mark to  extend the Delaware lead to 11-5. Cam Acchione netted his only goal on the day on an assist from Robinson with 6:16 to play. Robinson then put the game on ice with his fourth goal of the contest at the 4:43 mark and sealed Delaware’s sixth straight CAA victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Ward extended his points streak to 48 straight games.
  • Robinson is now four goals away from breaking Delaware’s all-time goals record.
  • Saturday’s game was McCurry’s fourth straight game with two or more goals.
