Blue Jays Bank Second Top-20 Win in Four Days

TOWSON, MD – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team capped a rugged two-game, four-day road swing with its second top-20 win in as many outings as the Blue Jays topped host Towson, 11-10, at Unitas Stadium Tuesday evening.  The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Tigers drop their opener to slip to 0-1.

In a game of runs, the Blue Jays had quickly doubled a two-goal lead midway through the third quarter as back-to-back strikes form Tyler Eye and Brooks English in a span of just 36 seconds gave the Jays an 8-4 lead with just over five minutes remaining.

As quickly as the lead went to four it was down to one as the Tigers struck for three goals in a 55-second span late in the period to make it a one-goal game entering the final quarter.  A Mikey Weisshaar step-down with 1:55 on the third-quarter clock was followed nine seconds later by a Ronan Fitzpatrick strike off the faceoff; Fitzpatrick added his fourth of the night 45 ticks later to make it 8-7.

The 8-7 margin was the first of four times the Tigers would pull within a goal in the final 17 minutes, but the Blue Jay defense never allowed them to pull even.  Fourth-quarter Blue Jay goals from Hunter Chauvette, Logan Callahan and Stu Phillips were answered by Bode Mauer, Weisshaar and Fitzpatrick, the last of which came with the Tigers a man up and just 39 seconds remaining in regulation.

Towson won the faceoff after the Fitzpatrick goal and quickly called timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Tigers weren’t able to generate a shot against the Blue Jay defense and Weisshaar’s skip pass was knocked away in the final five seconds with Blue Jay sophomore Luke Martin coming up the ground ball to seal the win.

Johns Hopkins had grabbed control in the first half on the strength of a four-goal run that took just over three minutes early in the second quarter.  The Blue Jays had seen the Tigers strike with just five seconds remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at 2-2 before sprinting ahead to the four-goal lead.

Co-captain Dylan Bauer ignited the four-goal spurt as he isolated on the wing and beat his defender to the goal to break the tie.  Just 32 seconds later, it was sophomore Chuck Rawson getting to the middle of the field before flipping a pass to Chauvette, who picked the corner to double the Jays’ lead.

Chauvette would add his second of the game just over two minutes later off an assist from English and Scott Smith capped the run with a goal 24 seconds later to give the Jays a 6-2 lead.

The Tigers had it down to 6-3 at the half and made it 6-4 midway through the third quarter on the second Fitzpatrick goal of the night.  That set the stage for the back-and-forth final 21 minutes and a Blue Jay victory that was sealed with Martin’s ground ball as time expired.

Chauvette (3g), English (1g, 3a) and Rawson (2a) registered multi-point games for the Blue Jays, who also got a 14-of-24 performance at the X from Callahan and 10 saves from Luke Staudt in the victory.

Fitzpatrick’s five goals accounted for half of Towson’s output on the night and Chop Gallagher (1g, 2a) and Weisshaar (2g, 1a) added three-point nights for the Tigers.  Luke Downs posted 11 saves in goal for Towson.
