MEDIA RELEASE 1/17/18
ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Chesapeake Bayhawks entered the 2018 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft seeking to bolster the defensive corps and addressed that need during Wednesday afternoon’s proceedings.
General Manager and Head Coach Dave Cottle selected five close defensemen or long stick midfielders as part of the Supplemental Draft, which lasted 12 rounds. Any players not previously affiliated with Major League Lacrosse or not included on the 23-man protected rosters of the nine franchises were eligible.
“We only had four defensemen on the 23-man roster so we needed to create some depth with that unit,” Cottle said. “You have to play at least five poles in a game so there is a chance for these guys to come in and contribute to the Bayhawks this coming season.”
Chesapeake chose former Duke University long stick midfielder Luke Duprey with the fourth overall selection in the first round. The rangy 6-foot-5, 210-pounder amassed 143 career ground balls and was a USILA third team All-American selection as a senior in 2014.
Duprey was a first-round draft pick of the New York Lizards and played in eight games as a rookie after attending Officer Candidate’s School. He currently serves as a volunteer coach at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
“Luke is in the model of some of the long stick middies we’ve had in the past in that he’s a big, strong guy that is very aggressive and really hunts the ball,” Cottle said.
Chesapeake reclaimed two players it was forced to leave unprotected with its second and fourth round selections. Cottle nabbed long stick midfielder Matt Rees with the 13th overall pick then landed short stick defensive midfielder Mark Glicini at No. 31.
Rees, a second round pick in the 2017 MLL Collegiate Draft, played in two games for the Bayhawks as a rookie last season. The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder ranks sixth in Naval Academy history with 186 ground balls and set a program record for a long sticker with 19 career points.
“Matt is still making the transition to professional lacrosse and we are hoping he can build on the experience he gained in games and practices last summer,” Cottle said of Rees, who is an active duty Naval Officer stationed in Norfolk.
Glicini played in 13 games for Chesapeake during the 2017 season and contributed 14 ground balls to go along with a goal and an assist.
“Mark is one of the highest character kids I’ve ever been around. He is a great teammate and great locker room presence,” Cottle said.
Chesapeake had consecutive picks in the fifth round and chose offensive midfielder Brian Masi and close defenseman Goran Murray at No. 39 and 40.
Masi became just the second Sacred Heart product ever taken in the MLL Collegiate Draft, but did not wind up practicing or playing for the Atlanta Blaze last season. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound New Yorker scored 83 goals and totaled 126 points during his career at Sacred Heart.
“I scouted Masi at the North-South game and thought he was terrific,” Cottle said. “He’s a great athlete with great size and great potential.”
Cottle recruited Murray to the University of Maryland, where he became a three-time All-American. The Pennsylvania native was a first team pick as a junior in 2014 and was the 37th overall pick of the 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft by the Charlotte Hounds.
“Goran is an excellent athlete who has always been a very strong on-ball defender,” said Cottle, noting that Murray resides in the Philadelphia area and will be able to regularly attend practices.
Chesapeake chose two players with local ties during the Supplemental Draft, getting former Towson University midfielder Tyler Young (Arundel High) and former Loyola-Maryland defenseman Jason Crane (Chesapeake High) in the ninth and 12th rounds, respectively.
Midfielder Jeff Froccaro, an 11th round pick out of Princeton University, is the brother of current Chesapeake midfielder Jake Froccaro.
