The Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners men’s lacrosse team (1-0) would open their season against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (2-2). Metro would start the 2017 season with a new head coach, Coach Daniel Hunter. This was Coach Hunter’s first game coaching in the MCLA in nearly a decade and it was against the Mines who he coached from 2005-2008. Mines Assistant Head Coach Adam Botts actually played for Coach Hunter during his tenure at Mines. And what a welcome back he would have as the Roadrunners would dominate Mines. Final Score: MSU Denver 15—Mines 3.

The Orediggers would start out the scoring in the first and that would be all fans would see in the quarter. The net minders were spectacular with Freshman Jake Miller getting the start in between the pipes for the Roadrunners, allowing only one goal from the Orediggers. Score at the end of one: Mines 1—MSU Denver 0.
Going into the second half, Metro would see junior attackman Anthony SanFilippo notch two; and senior attackman Josh Davis get his first of five on the day. The Roadrunners would go up 3-2 in the second. But Mines would find a way to tie the game just before the half. Score at the end of two: MSU Denver 3—Mines 3.
The second half would be a different story as MSU Denver would dominate the Orediggers and shut them out in the last half. Metro would put seven on the board in the third and another five in the fourth. Final Score: MSU Denver 15—Colorado School of Mines 3.
The Roadrunners would see goals from seven different players including: Josh Davis #88 (5G 1A); Anthony SanFilippo #1 (4G 2A); Mitch Larson #3 (3G 5A); and Kyle Miller #12, TJ Florence #11, and Marco Wiederaenders #9 each with one apiece.
At the face-off “X”, the Roadrunners would have Tristan Darnell and Tyler DeVries split the duties. Net minder Bryson Olejnik would finish out the game in the fourth.
Some other key players to the game were: Adam Legaretta #20 (8GB 1A); Justin Galbraith #18 (6 GB); and Joey Huntley #5 (6GB).
The Metro State Roadrunners really brought it to the field yesterday. After two dominating losses in the pre-season, they wanted to get back on track. Coach Hunter had a great talk with the players in the pre-game huddle, a conversation that must have hit home as was apparent by the way they played as a team.
Next up, Metro State (1-0) will host their RMLC Northwest rivals the University of Colorado Denver Lynx (0-2) at Dicks Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday March 14, 2017 at 9:00 p.m.
