DENVER – The [1/1] University of Denver men’s lacrosse team suffered its first setback of the season, a 13-9 loss to [6/7] North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Freshman Ethan Walker posted his fourth hat trick of the season behind three goals and one assist, while 2016 Tewaaraton finalist Connor Cannizzaro tallied two goals to keep his point streak alive.

Tyler Pace made an impact in his first game back for the Pioneers (4-1), getting three points on one goal and two assists, while Austin French added two points on a goal and a helper. Alex Ready took the loss with six saves in 60 minutes between the pipes.

North Carolina (4-1) got four goals from Luke Goldstock and two each from Justin Anderson and Chris Cloutier, while Brian Balkam took the win with 17 saves in the game.

The Tar Heels struck first in the contest with a pair of goals and kept Denver at bay through the first quarter at 4-2 despite DU getting a goal each from Walker and Danny Logan. Goldstock was the go-to scorer for UNC as he tallied four goals in the first half as the visitors built up a 7-3 lead at halftime.

The third goal for the Pioneers came on Cannizzaro’s first of the game with 7:42 left in the second quarter, but DU couldn’t gather the momentum to trim the lead down as North Carolina got three goals from Goldstock through the remainder of the half.

UNC kept the Pioneers offense quiet in the third frame, getting three more goals to Denver’s two for a 10-5 lead as Walker and Pace tallied the lone markers for the hosts in the quarter.

The Crimson and Gold trimmed the lead to 11-8 behind a goal each from French, Connor Donahue and Walker, the latter getting his fourth hat trick of his rookie season, but North Carolina had a pair of shots from Anderson to put the lead back up to five before DU got one final tally from Cannizzaro to close out the game.
