The Boston Cannons (4-4) lost a tight one Saturday night at Harvard Stadium 17-14 against the Charlotte Hounds (4-3).
The first period was fast paced and the lead went back and forth with high lights of Cannon’s James Fahey on a fast break playing two on one with three quick passes to sink the goal. David Emala made the power play goal with 17 seconds left in the first to give the home team the advantage 7-6 when the horn blasted.
Both teams slowed down in the second and the Hounds showed patience in passing around the horn multiple times until an advantage was gained to take the shot. The Cannons continued to pressure the middle defense with individual attempts to break in front of the goal with Emala finally stretching across the goal to score unassisted. Mike Begley found Emala with a tough angle with a minute and one half to go to tie the game at 9-9 before the break.
Third period started off with a power play goal by the Hounds but Brent Adams took the long pass from Tyler Fiorito to score in transition. Joe Nardella won the next face off and took the ball to the cage himself putting the Cannons in front 11-10. The Hounds came back though with Joey Sankey to Joe McCallion to tie finishing the third.
The Hounds kept the momentum rolling into the fourth quarter, as Mike Chanenchuk ripped a two-point goal off the faceoff and McCallion followed with his third of the night to give the Hounds their largest lead of the game, 14-11, with just over 12 minutes remaining to play. But the Cannons responded almost immediately, scoring three goals — including two from Brodie Merrill — in less than two minutes to tie the game 14-14.
Charlotte countered with a three-goal run of their own to close out the game and preserve a 17-14 victory. Charlie Cipriano made a season-high 20 saves and the defense held Will Manny scoreless for the first time all year.
