PRESS RELEASE CHESAPEAKE BAYHAWKS
Annapolis, MD – The Chesapeake Bayhawks announced Tuesday that Myles Jones will be joining the team as a result of a trade with the Atlanta Blaze. In addition to the Duke graduate and rookie midfielder, the Bayhawks receive Atlanta’s 2nd Round Collegiate Draft Pick for 2017. Jones was the first overall pick of the 2016 MLL Collegiate Draft.
Matt Mackrides and the 2017 1st Round Collegiate Draft Pick will go to Atlanta. Mackrides has been with the Bayhawks for over four years and has contributed immensely to the strength of their midfield, resulting in two championships during his tenure with the team.
“Matt Mackrides has been a key member of the Bayhawks for four and a half years and we wish him nothing but success,” said Chesapeake Bayhawks General Manager Dave Cottle. “We were looking for a downhill dodger and some size. When Myles Jones became available, we pulled the trigger.”
Jones began his professional career this year as a midfielder for the Atlanta Blaze. During his collegiate career, Jones led the Duke Blue Devils in scoring with 77 points from 40 goals and 37 assists. As the nation’s top college midfielder, Jones was named the winner of the 2015 Lt. jg Donald MacLaughlin Jr. Award, in addition to his honors as a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award in 2015 and 2016. Jones will play alongside his former Assistant Coach from Duke University, Matt Danowski, to contribute to the Bayhawks offense.
“We are excited to add a great young player to the Bayhawks,” stated Head Coach Brian Reese. “Myles brings a dimension to the midfield that we were lacking and will be given the opportunity to play and develop around some other great offensive players and veterans.”
The Bayhawks host their next home game at Navy Marine-Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 2nd against the New York Lizards.
