RICHMOND, Va. – For a final time in 2016, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) handed out weekly men’s lacrosse awards Monday morning. Towson’s own defender Mike Lowe was named CAA Men’s Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week.
Lowe was named CAA Men’s Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week with Drexel’s junior attackman Robert Frazee. Fairfield’s Colin Burke was selected as the CAA Men’s Lacrosse Rookie of the Week.
With his first career weekly award, Lowe is the first Towson close defenseman to win CAA Player of the Week honors since the Tigers joined the league for the 2002 season.
Native to Monrovia, Maryland, Lowe played an outstanding defensive game this week as the No. 12 Tigers (12-2, 4-1 CAA) topped long-time rival Hofstra 8-7 on the road. It was Towson’s first win at James M. Shuart Stadium since the 2012 season. Lowe anchored a defense that held its 11th opponent of the season to single digits.
An Urbana High School product, Lowe marked Hofstra’s second-leading point getter, Sam Llinares, the reigning CAA Player of the Year. Lowe did his job well, keeping Llinares without a point and limiting the offensive threat to just one shot. Lowe forced three turnovers in the game while snapping up seven groundballs.
With Saturday’s win, Lowe and the Tigers earned the top seed in this week’s CAA Tournament and will host the championship event this week. No. 1 Towson opens semifinal play against fourth-seeded Drexel on Thursday at 4 p.m., followed by No. 2 Fairfield against No. 3 Hofstra at 7 p.m. The championship game will pit the semifinal winners in a 1 p.m. game, broadcasted live on the American Sports Network. All three CAA Tournament games will be played at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
