On April 30, the Rochester Knighthawks (6-11) took on the Saskatchewan Rush (13-5) in front of a home crowd of 6,547 at the Blue Cross Arena. This was a must win for the Knighthawks to keep post season dreams alive but unfortunately they would come up short against the Rush, as the Rush would get a 13-9 victory.
The game would start off in the first period as a very defensive standstill between both teams. It would be the Knighthawks striking first in just under a minute of play on a power-play goal from Cody Jamieson (Keogh, D. Dawson). Then it would be almost five minutes of play later that Rochester would get on the board again at 5:43 with Jamieson getting his second goal of the night to put the Knighthawks up 2-0. The Rush would finally get on the board at 9:29 from Brett Mydske making it a 2-1 game heading into the second period.
The start of the second would be in favor of the Knighthawks as they would score the first two goals of the period. The first would come at just 43 seconds into the period from Stephen Keogh; followed up by the Knighthawks Josh Gillam at 1:31 making it a 4-1 game in favor of Rochester. However, the tide would take a quick turn in favor of the Rush as they would go on a seven goal run. Getting the run started for the Rush would be Zack Greer who would also tally two more goals during the run giving him a hat trick on the night; then it would be Ben McIntosh, Dan Taylor, Jarrett Davis; and Curtis Knight all tallying one goal apiece putting the Rush up 8-4. Rochester would get one back at 14:28 from Brad Self unassisted. Saskatchewan would head into halftime with an 8-5 lead.
The third period would be much like the first as both sides would be at a defensive standstill. But the Knighthawks would score4 at 3:42 on a power-play opportunity from D. Dawson. The Rush would then get one goal themselves at 11:47 making it a 9-6 game heading into the fourth period.
For the start of the fourth it would the Rush’s Greer getting the scoring started as he would tally the first two goals of the period; the first coming at just 53 seconds into the period and then again at 3:35 giving the Rush a 11-6 lead and Greer five goals on the night. The Knighthawks would then tally the next two goals of the period the first coming from Keogh at 4:41; followed by Joe Resetarits at 8:33 making it 11-8 still in favor of the Rush. The Rush’s Ryan Dilks would tally another for Saskatchewan at 9:21 making it 12-8. Rochester’s Resetarits would grab his second goal of the night at 11:45 making it 12-9. The Rush would get one more on the night at 13:19 from Mark Matthews giving Saskatchewan the 13-9 victory over Rochester.
Rochester will finish their regular season tonight May 1st as they travel to take on the New England Black Wolves.
