Boston, MA (May 21, 2016) – Despite a hat trick from midfielder Justin Turri, the Cannons snapped their three-game winning streak in a 14-7 decision to the Ohio Machine at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night.
“To their credit, Ohio played a great game. Our guys were resilient, and they didn’t stop playing. We just didn’t have a great night,” said head coach, Sean Quirk following the defeat. “We were off on our game a bit. We’ll bounce back for Denver and good things will come.”
It was Davey Emala who put the Cannons on the board sixteen seconds into the first quarter after receiving a pass from Wells Stanwick. Joe Nardella won the opening face-off, and passed to Josh Hawkins who carried the offense up the field to find Stanwick.
Three minutes later Ohio’s Tom Schreiber beat Tyler Fiorito and knotted the score at 1-1. The Machine went on a three-goal run and began to pull away. Before the buzzer sounded, Justin Turri managed to cut the score in half with his first goal of the game.
The Cannons opened the second frame when Ryan Izzo scored his first goal of his Major League Lacrosse career just 11 seconds into the new quarter. Izzo received a slick over the shoulder pass from Nardella before going low stick side on the Machine goaltender, to find the back of the net.
Ohio struck again, ending any chances of a Boston rush and their momentum. The Machine tacked on five goals before the end of the half. Davey Emala added another goal in the mix, but it was pretty much all Ohio.
The Machine poured on the offense from there. Turri shortened the Cannons deficit to 11-7 at one point in the third quarter after Schrieber added a third goal to his repertoire on the evening. The Machine silenced the Cannons offense in the fourth quarter scoring three more times.
Nardella was 13-21 on the face-offs against the Machine and Tyler Fiorito stopped 10 of the 23 shots that he faced during the game.
Boston will aim to bounce back as they travel to take on the Denver Outlaws on May 28th. The Cannons will be back in play at Harvard Stadium on June 11th against the Charlotte Hounds.
