TOWSON, Md. – A goal from the Delaware Blue Hens just six seconds into the game was not the start No. 7/No. 6 Towson was looking for, falling to its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival 10-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (10-2, 2-1 CAA) fell into a 3-0 hole in the first three minutes and could not bounce back. Delaware (5-8, 2-1 CAA) had two three-goal runs that sealed Towson’s fate.

How It Happened

  • Delaware’s faceoff specialist Jake Hervada won the game’s opening draw and scored just six seconds into the game. The Blue Hens extended the lead less than a minute later as Paul Major logged his first goal at 13:58.
  • Major forced the Tigers to call timeout at 12:40 after he notched his second of the day to put Delaware up 3-0.
  • Extra-man specialist Ian Kirby, a redshirt freshman, cut the Hens’ lead to two as he posted his 10th goal of the year and seventh on the man up. Ryan Drenner was credited with his 18th helper of the season.
  • The Blue Hens rounded out the bevy of scoring in the first five minutes with the game’s fifth goal from Andrew Romagnoli at 10:05.
  • Spencer Parks cut the lead in half, 4-2 Delaware, as the Tiger senior put away a nifty behind-the-back shot on a Jon Mazza pass. Delaware’s Dean DiSimone put the Hens back up by three at 6:47, the final goal of the first quarter.
  • Major got his hat trick to start the second quarter at 11:10, putting Delaware back up by four.
  • The Tigers got back-to-back goals late in the second from Mazza and Mike Lynch at 4:19 and 1:39, respectively. The Tigers trailed at halftime for just the third time this season.
  • Delaware rattled off three straight goals late in the third quarter and early in the four. Jake Levine finished a pass from Romagnoli with 2:22 left in the third, followed by Major’s fourth with eight seconds in the period from DiSimone.
  • Steve DeLargy finished the three-goal run with 11:49 left in regulation on a DiSimone pass, making it a 9-4 contest.
  • Towson got another pair of goals, this time from Drenner with 10:25 to go and 8:18. The first goal was assisted by Tyler Konen while the second pulled Towson within striking distance, 9-6.
  • DeLargy put the final nail in the Tigers’ coffin at 6:13, the Hens’ 10th goal of the game, becoming just the second team in 2016 season to reach double digits against Towson.
  • Joe Seider, a Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List candidate, notched his only goal of the game with 2:06 left on a Parks assist. Seider extended his goal streak to 17 games with his tally.

Behind the Numbers

  • Towson struggled at the faceoff X early as specialist Alec Burckley lost his first three draws. Steven Stillwell came on and finished the game in the faceoff department, winning a career-best 11 draws on 17 chances. Hevarda went 9-for-20 for the Blue Hens.
  • Uncharacteristically, the Tigers had 13 turnovers, including 10 in the second half. Delaware had 12 miscues, with six coming in the fourth.
  • Redshirt senior Tyler White, a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, overcame a slow start and finished with 11 saves, stopping six in the second period. His counterpart Parker Ferrigan also made 11 saves.
  • The 10 goals scored by Delaware marked just the second time this season a team has scored double digits against the Tigers. No. 11 Johns Hopkins posted 14 goals at Homewood Field on March 12.
  • Towson saw its second five-game winning streak of the season snapped, while also ending a four-game victory stretch over Delaware.

  • Towson returns home next Saturday for Senior Day as the Tigers take on Fairfield.
  • Faceoff is set for noon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium in the pivotal CAA match up. The Stags lead the CAA conference standings with a 3-0 mark.
