The Calgary Roughnecks played host to the visiting Vancouver Stealth on Saturday April 9, in a Star Wars theme night benefiting the S.T.A.R.S (Shock – Trauma – Air – Rescue – Service) program. Calgary in custom jerseys depicting the Darth Vader in the front defeated the Stealth 16-12.

Opening the scoring was Calgary’s Jon Harnett (#33) only to have Vancouver’s Corey Small (#15) respond 59 seconds later with a bounce shot to beat Mike Poulin (#30). Tied at one the Stealth took the lead on Thomas Hogarth (#23) just over a minute later, followed by Keegan Bal with his first NLL goal (#9). After one quarter the Stealth lead 3-1.

Into the second the Roughnecks had a five minute power play in which they would capitalize twice from Dane Dobbie (#44) and Wesley Berg (#14) to even the score at three. Vancouver’s Logan Schuss (#18) scores a goal as the 30 second shot clock ran out, Stealth in front by one. A short lived lead was spoiled by the Roughnecks attack of four goals in less than four minutes (Curtis Dickson with two, Dane Dobbie and Tyler Digby) to go up 7-4. Stopping the goal run was Joel McCready (#55) beating Mike Poulin through the five hole. Jeff Shattler (#77) would get the last goal of the quarter leading into the half and on the scoreboard 8-5 Roughnecks.

The pressure was constant from the Roughnecks opening the third quarter scoring four straight from Tyler Digby, Curtis Manning and Dickson for two, extending the lead to 12-5.  Vancouver would relieve Tyler Richards (#00) with Eric Penny (#61).  Jordan Durston (#78) puts one by on a stunned Poulin on a no look shot putting the Stealth to within six. In response the Roughnecks score two on transition plays from Scott Carnegie (#24) and Garret McIntosh (#6). Joel McCready would score between Poulin’s legs cutting the Roughnecks lead to seven.

The fourth quarter would begin with Stealth goals from Rhys Duch (#10) and Corey Small (#15) slicing at the Roughnecks lead of five. Dane Dobbie (#44) scores his hat-trick goal late in the quarter in response Duch (#10) putting it by Poulin to make it a 15-10 game. Within seconds Greg Harnett (#11) would score to make it 16-10. Never quitting, the Stealth pressure was rewarded with two late goals by Logan Schuss and Keegan Bal ending the game 16-12.
