Seven different Terriers found the back of the net

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Boston University men’s lacrosse team dropped an 11-7 decision to Holy Cross on Friday night at Holy Cross Field.

BU (8-6, 3-5 PL) will miss the Patriot League Tournament by a game for the second straight season while Holy Cross (4-10, 3-5 PL) earns the sixth and final spot.

Seven different Terriers found the back of the net, with freshmen James Burr and Brendan Homire each tallying an assist as well. Juniors Sam Talkow, Adam Schaal and Greg Wozniak each scored, as did sophomores Greg Farris and Jack Wilson. Sophomores Ryan Hilburn and Hayden Ruiz each added an assist.

Talkow was terrific at the faceoff X as well, going 11-of-14 with five ground balls. Senior Elliott Burr was 4-of-7 at the X with two ground balls as BU won 16 of the 21 draws in the game. Junior Dominick Calisto recorded three ground balls and added a pair of caused turnovers while Wozniak added two ground balls in addition to a caused turnover and his goal.

Junior Christian Carson-Banister made 12 saves, including six in the second quarter to help keep the Terriers in the contest. BU only trailed by two at halftime, 5-3, before Holy Cross outscored the Terriers, 6-4, in the final 30 minutes.

The teams traded the opening two goals of the game before Holy Cross closed the first quarter with two markers to take a 3-1 lead. Wilson cut the deficit to 3-2 just 31 seconds into the second quarter during a man-down situation. Junior Cal Dearth began the sequence with a great outlet pass to Ruiz, who quickly found Wilson for the goal.

Just 15 seconds after Wilson’s goal, Talkow tied it after winning the ensuing faceoff. Burr was at goal line extended and hit Talkow at the top of the box with a pass. Talkow finished with a low shot for his sixth goal of the season.

The Crusaders scored the next three goals, including one to begin the third quarter. Wozniak beat the 10-man ride with his second goal of the season thanks to a terrific shot from the defensive third of the field. After Holy Cross took an 8-4 lead, Homire found Burr to make it an 8-5 deficit entering the final frame.

Two straight Holy Cross goals extended its lead to 10-5 before Schaal and Homire responded to cut the deficit back to three. BU continued to pressure, but Wilson had a shot saved in the waning moments to halt the comeback bid. A Sean Wilkinson marker into an open net ultimately sealed the result.

BU will have one more game in 2016 when the Terriers welcome Duke to Nickerson Field on May 8.
