Pioneers ranked No. 1 in both major polls on Monday
NEW YORK – [1/1] University of Denver sophomore FOGO Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Baptiste won 20 of his 23 faceoff attempts and picked up 11 ground balls in Denver’s 17-7 win over Providence on Saturday. The sophomore also netted his second goal of the 2016 campaign. Baptiste has had 20+ faceoff wins in eight career games.
Sophomore Brendan Bomberry (Ohsweken, Ontario) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday after netting his second career hat trick in Saturday’s win.
Denver is sitting back on top of the national rankings this week, retaking the No. 1 spot after earning 11 of 17 first place votes in the Nike/USILA Coaches’ Poll and 21 of the 28 first place votes in the Cascade/Maverik Media Poll.
DU has spent 10 weeks at No. 1 in the coaches’ poll since the start of the 2015 campaign, including seven in 2016. This week also marks the sixth that the Pioneers have had the top spot in the media poll in the last two seasons.
UP NEXT: The top-ranked Pioneers will host [19/18] Marquette on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. With both teams sitting at 4-0 in the BIG EAST standings, the winner will claim the top spot in next week’s BIG EAST Tournament, which will be played at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium for the first time in its history.
