BOSTON – The No. 18/19 Boston University men’s lacrosse team never trailed en route to an 11-6 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League with its second straight win over Colgate (3-3, 1-2 PL). The Terriers held a 6-3 lead at halftime and outscored the Raiders, 5-3, over the final two quarters. Talkow went 18-of-21 at X; Dearth scored career-high four goals.
Junior Sam Talkow (Delray Beach, Fla.) was terrific at the faceoff X, going 18-of-21 with 14 ground balls. He was 11-of-11 in the first half and won all five faceoffs in the fourth quarter. He has now won 44 faceoffs against Colgate over the last two seasons.
Cal Dearth (Ridgefield, Conn.) had his best game of the season, as the junior scored a career-high four goals and added an assist for a five-point afternoon. Sophomore Jack Wilson (Manlius, N.Y.) was also outstanding, tallying two goals and assisting on two others. He also collected a career-high four ground balls.
Junior Henry Lee scored his first collegiate goal while classmates Adam Schaal and Pat Myers each found the back of the net. Freshmen James Burr and Brendan Homire continued their strong campaigns with a goal apiece, while Burr also added an assist.
BU got another solid performance from junior goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister. He made 11 saves, including five in the third quarter to help keep the Terriers in front.
The Terrier defense in front of Carson-Banister was also solid, as they combined to hold an opponent under 10 goals for the third straight game. Junior Greg Wozniak had four ground balls and a caused turnover while classmate Dominick Calisto forced one turnover and won three ground balls. As a team, the Terriers collected 33 ground balls to just 25 for Colgate.
Lee opened the scoring halfway through the first quarter with a tremendous individual effort. He intercepted a pass for one of his three caused turnovers and went coast-to-coast for his first collegiate goal.
Wilson then made it 2-0 just 54 seconds later when he shook off a defender and ripped a shot past Burke. The teams traded a pair of goals to end the quarter before Colgate made it 3-2 early in the second stanza. Dearth scored two of the next three goals to keep the Terriers in front by two, with Burr closing the quarter with his 14th goal of the season.
Colgate finally won a faceoff on the opening draw of the third quarter, and the Raiders eventually capitalized with a goal to make it a 6-4 Terrier lead. Dearth responded, however, with two straight goals and BU eventually took an 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Terriers tallied the first three goals of the final frame, as Wilson, Schaal and Myers each found the back of the net. Jack Stebbins scored a late goal with 1:01 to play to close the scoring for Colgate.
BU will begin a three-game road swing next Saturday at Bucknell. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
