Jones Sets NLL Record in Win; Crawford Named League’s ‘Wingman’
March 10, 2016
Adam Jones wasted little time extending his goal-scoring-streak to 56 games on Saturday night against the New England Black Wolves at Pepsi Center, setting an NLL record for consecutive games with one or more goals. Jones’ first of the night came three-minutes-and-43-seconds into the contest, one of seven he’d score in Colorado’s 14-13 victory.
The fifth-year forward entered the game tied with teammate John Grant, Jr. for the longest scoring-streak in league history [Grant’s streak ended in 2011]. Jones entered with sock tricks in consecutive home games played. On Saturday, he one-upped his past two performances.
“It’s incredible to watch,” said coach Pat Coyle, who admitted that he’s never seen anything like the numbers Jones has put up in his last three games in Denver. “I’m still waiting for the other teams to figure out how to stop him, but I don’t know if that’s possible.”
Add the Black Wolves (who lead the East Division with a 5-3 record) to the list of those who tried – and failed – to slow down Jones.
Colorado improved to a league-best 8-2 this season, 5-0 at home. Four of the Mammoth’s five home victories have been by just one goal, as was the case on Saturday night as the team paid tribute to the Armed Forces. The other victory was by two.
Jones’ seven goals tied a career-high and gave him 34 on the season. “I don’t know if it’s the record that I’m excited about,” expressed Jones. “In lacrosse, you always want to be consistent. With that record and being consistent, that’s something I like to pride myself on. I like to show up game in and game out, work hard and help my team win. It’s a special moment, but at the same time I’m not focusing on it too much.” He might be the only one who isn’t!
Callum Crawford, who assisted on five of seven Jones goals, scored two late ones in the fourth quarter to give Colorado a 14-11 lead. New England scored twice in the final three minutes and had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds. Goaltender Alex Buque, who played the second half in relief of Dillon Ward, denied the Black Wolves’ last attempt.
Grant and Jeremy Noble each had two goals and four assists. Defenseman Jackson Decker scored in transition early in the fourth quarter.
Colorado will have its second and final bye of the regular season next weekend before traveling to Calgary to face the Roughnecks (3-7) on Saturday, Mar. 19.
