Pioneers open BIG EAST play next Saturday at Georgetown (9 a.m. MT/CBSSN)
DALLAS – The [1/1] University of Denver men’s lacrosse team’s 20-game winning streak came to an end with a 15-10 loss to [RV/RV] Penn State Saturday afternoon at Ford Stadium on the campus of SMU.
Junior Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) led Denver in scoring with three goals and a helper for his 21st hat trick and the 24th four-point game of his career. Senior captain Jack Bobzien (Littleton, Colo.) was Denver’s only other multi-goal scorer of the afternoon.
Sophomore Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) went 15-of-28 from the faceoff dot, picking up seven ground balls off the faceoffs in the game. Freshman netminder Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.) made eight saves and allowed 11 goals in just under three quarters before being lifted for classmate David Winsor (Boulder, Colo.) who allowed four goals in the final quarter and change.
UP NEXT: Denver opens BIG EAST play next Saturday as the Pioneers make the trip to Georgetown. Next weekend’s CBS Sports Network broadcast begins at 11 a.m. ET/9 a.m. MT.
POSTGAME NOTES:
– Denver is now 45-10 as a top-5 team since turning Division I, including 9-3 as the No. 1 team in the USILA Coaches’ Poll.
– Head coach Bill Tierney (seventh season) is now 90-26 at DU and 362-119 in his career (32nd season).
– Zach Miller extended his consecutive-game point streak to 45 games (entered this week 2nd in the nation). Miller has 140 points (77G-63A) during that stretch. Miller has had a point in every collegiate game he has played in (missed one game in 2014).
– Connor Cannizzaro extended his consecutive-game point streak to 33 games (entered the week 8th in the nation). Cannizzaro has 138 points (89G-49A) in that stretch.
– Cannizzaro also extended his consecutive-game goal streak to 33 games (entered the weekend first in the country). Cannizzaro has 89 goals in that stretch.
– Sophomore Trevor Baptiste has double-digit faceoff wins in all 27 games of his collegiate career.
