The Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft was held January 22, 2016. The Ohio Machine selected 10 players over the course of 8 rounds.
Before the draft, the Machine traded defenseman Dana Wilber to Chesapeake for the 11th overall selection in the 2016 collegiate draft and a fourth round pick for next year’s (2017) supplemental draft.
The Machine’s first draft pick and eighth overall, was Michael Quinn from Yale. He was Third-team All-American in 2015; and won the Christian Prince Memorial Award as defensive MVP; and a 2016 Preseason First Team All-American by Inside Lacrosse.
The next two picks in the Second Round were both from the University of Maryland. Kyle Bernlohr goal was selected 11th overall. He was awarded 2015 Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award for the nation’s most outstanding goalie; and was also named a 2016 Preseason First All-American by Inside Lacrosse. Bryan Cole a midfielder was the 16th pick overall. Cole was on the 2015 Big Ten All-Tournament Team; and a Preseason Third Team All-American.
Ohio’s next pick was 33rd overall, Bobby Schmitt a defenseman from Bellarmine University. The remaining picks included: 38th Dan Lomas an attackman from High Point University; 42nd Mike Messenger a midfielder from Limestone College; 44th Cameron Williams midfielder from Colgate University; 50th Zach Powers defenseman out of the University of North Carolina; 59th Vince Gravino an attackman from Canisius College; and to round it out finishing up with 68th Derrick Kihembo a midfielder from John Hopkins University. Kihembo comes from one of my favorite teams, and I’m excited to see him play for the Machine.
